Ration card e-KYC is now mandatory across India for every member on your card. Miss the state deadline and your subsidised wheat and rice can stop. Here are the 3 official, free ways to complete it in 2026 — including the new Mera eKYC face authentication app that works from home.

If you hold a ration card under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), the government now requires Aadhaar-based e-KYC for every single family member on your card. Many states have already set 2026 deadlines, and cards that miss the deadline are being flagged "unauthenticated" — which suspends subsidised wheat, rice and other PDS benefits.

This guide explains exactly what e-KYC means for your ration card, the 3 official ways to complete it in 2026 (including the new face-authentication "Mera eKYC" app), how to check your e-KYC status, and the most common reasons people get rejected.

What Is Ration Card e-KYC?

Ration card e-KYC (Electronic Know Your Customer) is an Aadhaar-based identity verification of every member listed on your ration card. It's done once per beneficiary and confirms to the Food & Civil Supplies Department that the people on your card are real, alive, and not duplicated on another household's card.

The objectives are:

  • Remove duplicate or ghost beneficiaries from the NFSA database
  • Prevent fraudulent claims on PDS benefits
  • Ensure subsidised food reaches the right households
  • Keep family details (additions, deletions, address) up to date
  • Improve transparency in the Public Distribution System (PDS)

Why It Matters Right Now

If your e-KYC is incomplete, your ration card may be marked "unauthenticated" in the NFSA database. Consequences depend on your state, but typically include:

  • Suspension of subsidised wheat, rice and other grain entitlements
  • Inability to use the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) portability outside your state
  • Eventual removal from the NFSA beneficiary list
  • Issues when applying for related schemes (PMGKAY, Ujjwala, state welfare)

Documents You Need Before Starting

  • Your ration card (physical copy or ration card number)
  • Aadhaar cards of every member listed on the ration card
  • An Aadhaar-linked mobile number that is currently active (for OTP)
  • Smartphone with a working front camera (for face authentication)
  • An Android phone if you plan to use the Mera eKYC app

Method 1 — Mera eKYC App (Face Authentication, Free)

Mera eKYC is the official Government of India app (published by NIC — National Informatics Centre) that lets you complete ration card e-KYC from home using your face — no fingerprint or FPS visit needed. This is the easiest method if your Aadhaar mobile number is no longer active.

  1. Install Mera eKYC from the Google Play Store (publisher: National Informatics Centre)
  2. Also install the "AadhaarFaceRD" app — required for the face-capture engine
  3. Open Mera eKYC, allow camera permission, select your State
  4. Enter the Aadhaar number of the family member being verified
  5. Enter the OTP sent to that member's Aadhaar-linked mobile
  6. Hold your phone steady at face level, blink when prompted — face capture takes 2–3 seconds
  7. On success, the app shows "e-KYC Successful" — repeat for every family member on the card

Method 2 — State PDS Portal (OTP, Online)

Almost every state has its own Food & Civil Supplies / PDS portal where you can complete e-KYC online via OTP — without installing any app.

  1. Go to nfsa.gov.in → "Ration Card Details on State-UT Portals"
  2. Click your state — you'll be redirected to your state's official PDS portal
  3. Find the "e-KYC" / "Aadhaar Authentication" / "Aadhaar Seeding" link (usually on the homepage or under Beneficiary Services)
  4. Enter your ration card number and the Aadhaar number of the member being verified
  5. Click "Send OTP" — verify the OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile
  6. Submit and download the acknowledgement / SRN for your records

The exact UI varies state-to-state, but the underlying NFSA + UIDAI flow is identical. Examples of official state portals: mahafood.gov.in (Maharashtra), aepds.bihar.gov.in (Bihar), tnpds.gov.in (Tamil Nadu), epos.up.gov.in (UP), epds.nic.in/MP (MP).

Method 3 — Biometric at Fair Price Shop (FPS)

If face authentication and OTP both fail (Aadhaar mobile dead, no smartphone, biometric issues), visit your local Fair Price Shop (ration dukaan). Every FPS in India now has an ePoS (electronic Point of Sale) device that does Aadhaar fingerprint authentication.

  1. Visit your assigned FPS with your ration card and Aadhaar of each family member
  2. The dealer will pull up your card on the ePoS device
  3. Each member must place a finger on the fingerprint scanner (or use iris if fingerprints fail)
  4. Once all members are authenticated, the FPS marks e-KYC complete on the spot
  5. Ask for an acknowledgement slip — keep it until your status updates online

This method is free at the FPS itself; no fee is officially charged. Avoid any dealer who demands cash for e-KYC.

How to Check Your Ration Card e-KYC Status

Online (any state)

  1. Open nfsa.gov.in → "State Food Portals" → select your state
  2. On the state portal, find "Know Your Ration Card" or "Beneficiary Status"
  3. Enter your ration card number
  4. The page shows each family member's e-KYC status as "Yes (Authenticated)" or "No (Pending)"

Via Mera Ration 2.0 app

The separate "Mera Ration 2.0" app (also by NIC, different from Mera eKYC) lets you check the e-KYC status of every member on your card, see your last 6 months of grain entitlement, and request portability — all in one place.

Offline

Ask your FPS dealer to print your card details from the ePoS device, or visit the Block Supply Office for a printed beneficiary report.

Common Reasons e-KYC Gets Rejected

Name or DOB mismatch between Aadhaar and ration card

Even a single-letter difference (e.g. "Mohd" vs "Mohammad") causes failure. Fix the ration card record at your Block Supply Office, or update Aadhaar at the myAadhaar portal (free until 14 June 2027).

Aadhaar mobile number not active

OTP-based e-KYC needs the Aadhaar-linked mobile. If your old number is dead, either visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra to update the mobile (biometric required, online not possible), or use face authentication via Mera eKYC instead.

Fingerprint authentication fails at FPS

Common with elderly people, manual labourers and farmers due to worn fingerprints. Ask the dealer to use iris scan instead — every ePoS device supports it. If iris also fails, switch to face authentication via Mera eKYC.

Family member is missing or wrongly listed

If a member was added through marriage, birth or migration but never officially added to the card, e-KYC for that member will fail. Add the member through your state PDS portal first, then run e-KYC.

AadhaarFaceRD app not installed (Mera eKYC users)

Mera eKYC depends on a separate UIDAI app called "AadhaarFaceRD" for the actual face-capture engine. If it's missing, the app shows a generic error. Install it from Play Store — it's published by UIDAI.

Final Thoughts

Ration card e-KYC is a one-time process per family member that has now become essential — not optional — to keep your subsidised food benefits. The good news: with the Mera eKYC face-authentication app, you can finish it from home in under 5 minutes, even if your Aadhaar mobile number is no longer active.

Use only the official Mera eKYC app from Play Store (publisher: National Informatics Centre) and your state's official PDS portal. Don't pay any agent — every official method (Mera eKYC, state portal OTP, FPS biometric) is free.

// FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. e-KYC is now mandatory across India for every member listed on a ration card under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) — not just the head of family. Cards that miss the state-specific deadline are marked "unauthenticated" and lose subsidised wheat, rice and other PDS benefits.
